1. Normal Grief

This is a normal reaction to losing a loved one. The bereaved may show symptoms such as sadness, poor appetite, insomnia and so on.  The duration of “normal” depression will vary among individuals and different cultural groups.  

  • 2-Complicated Grief

Complicated bereavement or grief can include the absence of grief, conflicted grief, chronic mourning and so on.  

  • 3-Anticipatory Grief

This occurs when we know someone is about to die, so we begin to prepare psychologically and emotionally.

  • 4-Unanticipated Grief 

This can occur after an unexpected death, where the person needs time to grasp the events that have happened. 

  • 5-Conflicted Grief

Conflicted grief can occur where the person has an ambivalent relationship with the deceased, such as loving and hating the deceased.

  • 6-Chronic Grief

This can occur when a survivor has been totally dependent on the person who has died, so finds it hard to cope without them.

  • 7-Absent Grief 

The person does not show grief. But may show it at a later time. 

  • 8-Distorted Grief

This can be associated with guilt and anger. It can take unexpected forms. 

  • 9-Inhibited Grief

This occurs when some of the feelings associated with grief are not expressed.

10-Unresolved Grief

This is where the person has not resolved their feelings of grief.

11-Dealyed Grief

Is common. Grief can be delayed for some reason, perhaps for more than two weeks after a death.

12-Prolonged Grief

Prolonged or chronic grief is usually that which lasts in excess of 6 months. 

13-Abnormally Intense Grief

Depressive symptoms are common with depression, so it can be hard to determine what is abnormally intense grief and what is depression.
