HOW TO HELP THE GRIEVING ADOLESCENT IN MENTAL HEALTH

Every
teenager needs to grieve in their own time and in their own way. It is no good
trying to speed up the recovery process as this could be harmful. However,
there are ways of helping a bereaved adolescent.

  1. Observe

Check
things out to find out what the person needs and wants at this time. You can
take a direct approach – Ask the teenager what they need. You can also take an
indirect approach – Watch for their reaction to offers of support. Be careful
of physical contact.

  • 2- Invite the Grieving Teen to Talk

Grieving
people often have difficulty asking for help. They are preoccupied with
mourning and may be afraid to be seen as weak or a burden. They may not be aware that talking will help
them.

Be clear about the type of help you are
