WHAT ARE THE STRATEGIES FOR HANDLING LONG TERM GRIEF?

ACCREDITED SENIOR PSYCHOTHERAPIST/COUNSELLOR -Dr.Fawzy Masaoud-LONDON, ENGLAND

1-Guided Mourning

This is
the name given to the counselling process that attempts to reduce avoidant
behaviours that are thought to prolong grief. The bereaved person is assisted
in confronting memories of the deceased and encouraged to engage in activities
and enter situations that provoke memories of them. It can be seen that this is
a form of exposure treatment.

Typically,
the client is exposed gradually to situations that provide a small amount of
anxiety (real or imagined), and they progress slowly to increasingly more
difficult situations. This process is known as desensitisation. The client
enters the grief-producing situation whilst they are relaxed, and the ultimate
aim is that they will be relaxed in all grief-producing situations.

2- Support Groups

By sharing their experience of bereavement with others, some people are successfully able to deal with it. Such groups also offer practical advice and discuss different coping mechanisms.
