Perls argued that psychological problems originate in
frustrations and denials of the idea that people are innately good and allowed
to express this goodness. When figures that emerge from the background that
have not been resolved or completed, they can show themselves as any number of
feelings including; resentment, rage, anxiety, grief, guilt and so on. As these feelings have not been fully
experienced in awareness, they will tend to hang around in the background and interfere
with present life experiences.

These feelings will persist until they have been dealt with
and resolved. Until this occurs the
individual may exhibit compulsive behaviour, wariness, oppressive energy and
self-defeating behaviour. Unresolved issues can also manifest themselves in
physical ailments in the body, often in the form of blockages.
