WHAT IS THE SOCIAL EXCHANGE IN MENTAL HEALTH?
Thibault and Kelley, 1967, suggest that the move towards
closeness depends on pros and cons of the relationship. People evaluate the
pros and cons in a number of ways that include:
- 1-Own pros against cons Whether the pros (rewards, social support etc.) exceed the cons(time, effort put in etc.)
- 2-Own pros and cons versus other pros and cons Who puts the most inand who gets the most out.
- 3- Anticipated balance of
pros and cons (comparison level)
Based on personal
experience and the observation of others’
relationships. Outcomes that exceed the comparison level
would be deemed as being satisfying
- 4-Current relationship
Whether or not a different relationship would be more
People who cannot imagine a more satisfactory relationship are
morelikely to remain in a dissatisfactory one.
